Asbury Park Rejects Topless Beach

Asbury Park City Council declined to take action on the topless beach proposal. The city attorney briefed the council on two ordinances that “ban” the behavior.

While not successful this time, it’s progress to see topless sunbathing at least being discussed.

Asbury Park, NJ Considering Topless Beach

Thanks to a local resident, Asbury Park, NJ is considering declaring a section of the beach topless. Reggie Flimlin has asked the Asbury Park City Council to consider the move which will be voted on July 7th. Deputy Mayor John Loffredo says, "Women in other parts of the world go to the beach topless. We think New Jersey women are just as beautiful as any women anywhere in the world."

Topless Vegas Pools in the News

Pool season in Las Vegas is heating up and media coverage has increased. There were several mentions last week of the topless pools in Vegas. None of the reports included any new information, however, it’s encouraging to see the topless pool scene covered for awareness purposes.

Topless Firefighting 101

This has nothing to do with the US, but it’s a good story nonetheless. A sunbather in Darwin Australia, noticed that a tree had caught fire and was threatening a building. So what did she do? She promptly hopped up, ran to alert someone, and then proceeded to find a hose and fight the fire herself. The most interesting part of this story, she did it all while topless. According to her, she didn’t even fully realize it until well into subduing the blaze. Simply stunning.

ARIA: Keep Your Tops On

Correction to the original post that reported the ARIA pool was topless. An article today in the Las Vegas Sun reports the decision was made to not allow topless sunbathing, “Light Group President Jodi Myers said one reason it decided against topless sunbathing at its new pool is because the no-party policy limits the club’s marketing.”

An email from ARIA confirms the same:

“Liquid, operated by The Light Group, is not topless but is considered an adult pool. Liquid features live DJ’s, occasional celebrity appearances, high-tech amenities and 17 cabanas, offering prime seclusion within the already exclusive setting.”

ABC Wants Sofia Vergara Topless in Hawaii

Last Wednesday night’s installment of the ABC comedy Modern Family mentioned topless sunbathing in Hawaii. A trip to Maui is planned to celebrate the birthday of the patriarch of the family, Jay (Ed O'Neill). To Jay’s delight, his wife, Gloria (Sofía Vergara), mentions to him that she has found a topless beach to visit in Hawaii.

It’s great to see a positive reference to topless sunbathing in the US on a primetime family television show. It is however interesting that Hawaii is the destination. While most would agree that it is not illegal to sunbath topless in Hawaii - it’s rarely ever practiced on any of the islands. Maui does have a few unofficial clothing optional beaches: Little Beach at Makena and Red Sand Beach in Hana. But other than those two spots, topless sunbathing is not common in Hawaii. Hopefully that won’t stop Sofía Vergara’s character.

ABC’s Modern Family
